    Career Center

    The
Career Center at 1615 Miller St. is an extension of the regular high schools and offers many Advancecd Placement and Career Technical courses. The Career Center also houses the Extended Day Program. Transportation is provided to the Career Center twice daily, but students are also able to drive themselves to the campus. Parking is limited and requires a permit.

    Course Loads & Withdrawal
All students should enroll for a full schedule of seven classes, unless given permission by the principal to do otherwise. With administrative approval, a student may withdraw before the halfway point of a course. Students may not transfer to the same course under a different teacher. All efforts will be made to move the student to a similar course, usually at another level (e.g. standard to honors, honors to advance-placement, etc.). All of the previous grades will "follow" the student to the new course, however the student may be required to make up assignments as deemed appropriate by the teacher. Students that choose to withdraw from a course after the halfway point will automatically earn an "F" for that particular course.

    Dual Enrollment
Forsyth Technical Community College offers the opportunity to enroll in college courses free of tuition while a student is in high school. The student is responsible for supplies, purchasing textbooks and other related fees.
A student may also enroll for credit at Salem College, Winston-Salem State University or Wake Forest University in elective courses that are not part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District's curriculum.
For more specific guidelines please see the R.J. Reynolds High School Student Handbook.

    Exams
    1. A final exam will be given in all courses.
    2. Only senors may earn an exemption from their exams.
    3. A student must take the final exam in order to earn credit for a course.
    4. End-of-course tests will count as the final exam for that particular course.
    5. Exams will count as at least 25 percent of the final grade.
    6. With administrative approval, missed exams should be made up promptly at the end of the semester. A schedule for specific make-up dates will be available at the end of the semester.

    Grading System
R.J. Reynolds High School Evaluates each student's academic performance using a report card. Report cards are issued every nine weeks, with progress reports being issued to students every three weeks during the grading period. Progress reports are distributed to parents via email or as a hard copy given to the student.
Student progress in a subject is indicated by letter grades:
    A Superior performance 93% to 100%
    B Good performance 85% to 92%
    C Satisfactory performance 77% to 84%
D Poor perfomance, but passing 70% to 76%
    F Failure 69% and below

With administrative approval, a student who receives an Incomplete (I) on his or her report card has one week to make up work and receive a grade. If the student's work is not made up, the student will receive an "F" for the grading period.

    Honor Roll
To be eligible for the Honor Roll, a student must:
  • Receive no grade lower than a "C";
  • Mantain a "B" average; and
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of five courses during the grading period.

    Promotion & Graduation Requirements
The following number of credits are necessary to be promoted from one grade to the next:
Promotion to Grade 10 5 credits
Promotion to Grade 11 9 credits
Promotion to Grade 12 16 credits
    Graduation 23 credits

In order to graduate from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, a student must:
  • Meet the crieria for one specific Course of Study, either College Prep, College Tech Prep, College/University Prep, or Occupational.
  • Pass the N.C. Competency Test;
  • Pass the N.C. Computer Skills Test; and
  • Complete mathematics courses through Geometry or Technical Math II.

Beginning with the Class of 2010, students also will have to:
  • Be proficient in five (5) required end-of-course exams that include English I, Algebra I, Biology, Civics and U.S. History.
  • Complete a Senior Project

A full list of the requirements, including changes for the Class of 2010, can be found in the R.J. Reynolds High School Student Handbook.

    Report Cards
Report cards are sent out as quickly as possible at the end of each quarter. High school report cards take longer to finish, but should be sent home within two weeks of the end of the quarter.

    Senior Exam Exemptions
Seniors may be exempted from their final exams by meeting the following criteria:
    1. An "A" grade and no more than three absences.
    2. A "B" grade and no more than two absences.
    3. A "C" grade and no more than one absence.

All seniors are permitted and will be encouraged to take exams even if they are eligible for an exemption. If a senior qualifies for an exemption, he or she shall have the option of taking the exam and counting the exam grade only if it improves the final course average.
For more specific information about a student's eligibility for exemption, please see the R.J. Reynolds High School Student Handbook.

    Testing
Tests can be useful, but they are only one way of evaluating a student's performance and needs. Students take many kinds of tests that include:
  • Teacher-designated tests and texbook tests. Such tests help assess how much material a student has learned in class.
  • End-of-Course tests. End-of-course tests are given statewide at the end of certain high-school courses. They take about two hours and area given instead of a teacher-created test at the end of the course. They are based on the material required for each course by the state and compare students with those in other schools in North Carolina. They also provide information about how our school system compares with others in these subject areas. Grades on end-of-course tests account for 25 percent of the student's semester grade for the test.
  • Diagnostic tests. These tests can be used before a subject is taught to find out how much a student already knows.
  • Quarterly tests. These tests provide information to the teacher about student proficiency and may indicate whether modifications need to be made in instruction.
  • Standardized tests. These tests compare students' abilities or achievements to standards that are usually derived from state or national samples of students of the same age or grade.

    Testing Schedule
In an effort to ensure an equitable distribution of student tests throughout the week, the following schedule has been developed for teacher-designated and quarterly tests. All efforts will be made by teachers to give their major tests on primary testing days, with the alternate testing day being used as a back-up.
