NEWS YOU CAN USE

Tailgate Gathering Will Precede Friday's Football Game

Matthew Gfeller’s family has asked that the football game against East Forsyth be played as scheduled this week. The Touchdown Club and football parents want to honor this request in a special way by holding a tailgate at 6 p.m. Friday in the parking lot beneath the scoreboard at Deaton-Thompson Stadium. Individuals should bring their own dinner. Let's come together as a Reynolds family to help our players, coaches, students and each other through this difficult time. Please spread the word to family and friends that we want to fill the stadium to show our love and support for the Gfeller family, coaches and football team. Go DEMONS!

RJRHS Community Mourns the Loss of Sophomore Matt Gfeller

The Reynolds High School community is grieving the loss of sophomore Matthew Gfeller. Matt died early Sunday morning after suffering a critical brain injury during Friday night's football game against Page High School. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gfeller family during this difficult time. Their involvement at Reynolds High School has been exemplary. Matt’s parents, Bob and Lisa, served as PTSA Co-Presidents in 2006-07 and are currently our athletic Booster Club Co-Presidents. Their oldest son, Robbie, graduated from RJR in 2008 and daughter, Haley, is a junior. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. A private internment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 West Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, for the Matthew Alan Gfeller Memorial Fund. For more information, visit JournalNow.

Your One-Time Donation Will Help Ensure Reynolds' Legacy

Strengthen the "Pillars of Excellence" by contributing to the R.J. Reynolds High School Legacy Campaign. The annual campaign, begun in 2007, is a combined fund-raising effort of the PTSA and Athletic Booster Club. Families are encouraged to contribute a one-time donation at the beginning of the year to support our school's excellence in academics, athletics, arts, diversity and civic responsibity. Your donation will automatically cover your PTSA membership, and in appreciation of your support, giving at various levels will entitle you to receive valuable benefits! Click here for more on the Legacy Campaign or to make a contribution.

Give Your Used Books and Magazines a Second Life at Reynolds

Reynolds is adding a literacy program that will help struggling readers improve their reading and writing skills. To accomplish this, several of our teachers need to set up independent reading libraries in their rooms. You can help by donating any middle-school level books, fiction or non-fiction, for use in these classrooms. The material should be approrpriate for 4th to 8th grade levels. Also, any special-interest magazines will be useful, too. So drop off any books your student may have outgrown, or your Sports Illustrateds, People magazines and news magazines, in Mrs. Wiley's box in the main office.

It's Time to Shop Like the Demon You Are

Show your Reynolds pride with printed t-shirts, sweatshirts and lots of other embellished goods! The Demon Shop offers fresh new looks as well as classic looks and gift items at affordable prices. The shop is in the cafeteria and will be open during lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the first month of school. A "mobile shop" will offer items at most home football and basketball games. Parents interested in volunteering at the Demon Shop should contact Lisa Rowell.

Stay Connected by Subscribing to the Weekly PTSA E-Mail

It's common knowledge that the older your child, the less likely you are to hear about important upcoming events and announcements pertaining to school. To help alleviate that, the PTSA e-mails interested parents a weekly collection of news and events. To sign up for this service, e-mail our editor and write "Subscribe" in the subject field.

Additional Parking Set Aside for School Visitors

With the completion of the new Arts Building, Reynolds has set aside a handful of parking spots between it and the back of the auditorium for visitors. In addition to these spaces, several spots remain available in front of the school, or parallel in front of the auditorium and anywhere in the student lot. Parents and guests should not park in a numbered space in any lot.
